Honoring the Legacy and Sacrifice of Santa Maria Valley’s Heroes
Each year, the Santa Maria Valley Chamber, in partnership with the City of Santa Maria and local veterans’ organizations, hosts a community ceremony at the Freedom Monument Veterans Memorial. Typically held on Veterans Day (November 11th), this event is a cornerstone of our community’s commitment to ensuring that the service and sacrifice of our local military members are never forgotten.

About the Freedom Monument
Located in the heart of Santa Maria at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, the Freedom Monument Veterans Memorial is more than just a landmark—it is a sacred tribute to the men and women of the Santa Maria Valley who answered the call of duty.
A Poignant History
The monument’s origin is rooted in a deeply personal story. It was inspired by Doris Walker, a grieving mother who feared that the sacrifice of her son, Army 2nd Lt. James "Jimmy" D. Walker—who was killed in action in Vietnam—would be forgotten by his hometown.
Moved by her story, co-founders Bob Hatch (a highly decorated Vietnam veteran and former Chamber President) and Dave Cross (U.S. Army veteran) spearheaded an effort through the Santa Maria Valley Chamber to create a permanent place of honor. Dedicated on December 7, 2001—the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor—the monument ensures that no local service member who died for their country will ever be forgotten.

- All Branches: The site features seals and plaques for all branches of the military, including the U.S. Space Force seal, representing the valley’s close ties to Vandenberg Space Force Base.
- Community Support: The memorial stands as a testament to the collaboration between the Chamber, the City, the VFW Post 2521, and the Santa Maria Valley Honor Guard.
